David and Susan Coulter Welcome Center at Carnegie Mellon Unversity

Description

The CM-You Board is an interactive, tangible installation designed for Carnegie Mellon University’s David and Susan Coulter Welcome Center, transforming the visitor experience by fostering a deep sense of belonging between prospective students, their families, and CMU’s interdisciplinary culture. This project is rooted in comprehensive design research, including user interviews, competitive analysis, and co-design workshops, to create a personalized, immersive journey that highlights CMU’s academic offerings and Pittsburgh’s vibrant community. The David and Susan Coulter Welcome Center, located in the David A. Tepper Quadrangle at Carnegie Mellon University, opened in 2018 as a destination where prospective students and their families could experience CMU’s unique culture and leave with a memorable, positive impression. As the starting point for campus tours, the Welcome Center is often the first physical interaction visitors have with the university. However, despite its role, the space has not fully achieved its goal of emotionally connecting with visitors or conveying the university’s distinct identity. To bridge this gap, the CM-You Board was developed as an interactive installation that enhances the visitor experience. The CM-You Board reimagines how prospective students and their families engage with the university by offering an immersive, interactive exploration of CMU’s academic programs, interdisciplinary culture, and deep ties to Pittsburgh. Upon arrival, visitors are invited to interact with the CM-You Board through tangible pawns representing CMU’s seven schools and key aspects of Pittsburgh. This interactive experience allows visitors to see the real-world applications of CMU’s programs and visualize their own potential at the university and in Pittsburgh. The interactive experience begins with a discovery phase, where visitors are greeted by a wall projection and an instructional banner guiding them to the CM-You Board. The table plays an onboarding animation automatically, inviting exploration. Visitors then engage in the exploration phase using 7 school-specific pawns and 3 Pittsburgh pawns. Each pawn triggers personalized content on the translucent table surface, powered by computer vision and a projector system. For example, placing an academic pawn on the table displays student work through process videos and project showcases, tailored to the specific school or major. The system encourages visitors to explore interdisciplinary collaboration by placing two academic pawns together, revealing collaborative projects at the intersection of two fields. The reflection phase culminates in a personalized souvenir card with recommendations of CMU and Pittsburgh resources, encouraging further exploration online through a unique code. The CM-You Board also highlights Pittsburgh’s impact on the student experience. Visitors can use city-specific pawns to explore the connections between CMU and local industries, cultural institutions, and communities, emphasizing how the university’s location supports student growth and career opportunities. At the end of their journey, visitors receive a personalized souvenir card with tailored recommendations for further exploration at CMU and in Pittsburgh, along with a code for online engagement. The space design of this project at the Welcome Center features four CM-You Boards, enabling multiple families to engage simultaneously while waiting for their campus tour. The system architecture consists of a webcam to capture the shape of the pawns, which are identified using computer vision. Unity software projects the content onto the table surface, facilitated by a projector, webcam, computer, and a photo printer. The pawn design allows for rotation and pushing interactions, with the UI design following CMU’s color palette, with added elements inspired by student-created collages. This seamless blend of technology and design encourages visitors to visualize their future at CMU through personal exploration, shared values, and meaningful connections with both the university and the city of Pittsburgh. The CM-You Board transforms the Coulter Welcome Center into an engaging, emotionally resonant space that better tells CMU’s story and fosters a sense of belonging, providing a new standard for university welcome experiences.
