On the occasion of the 700th anniversary of Dante Alighieri’s death, The Visual Agency - an information design agency specialized in data-visualization based in Milan - has conceptualized, designed and developed this innovative instrument. This website enables users to independently discover and study the comprehensive body of artwork connected to and inspired by the Divine Comedy, in a way that has never been possible before.

700 years after Dante Alighieri's death, this digital humanities project celebrates, with a slow surfing site, the influence the Comedy has had on the world’s artistic heritage, inspiring millions of people in Italy and around the world. Divinecomedy.digital shows the influence of Dante's narrative world through a collection of artworks depicting scenes from The Divine Comedy. This collection consists of the digitized versions of artworks related to Dante’s narrative world. These artworks are extremely heterogeneous and come from over 70 museums and more than 90 authors. The introduction shows clusters of artworks arranged by their visual similarity, as shown in the introductory visualization that shows a panoramic overview of the whole collection. More than a thousand artworks between illuminated manuscripts, engravings, canvases, frescoes, and drawings have been classified; allowing the users to explore the content of this ever-growing catalogue. The project sails across 700 years of artistic heritage, gathering the many artistic interpretations that helped the mythical imagery of the Poem to take shape. Users will be able not only to navigate through the collection, but also to suggest missing artworks. As shown in the menu interactive visualization, the poem is divided into three cantiche: Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso, 30 settings, 100 cantos and 413 scenes. Each artwork in the collection has been classified and related to the scenes of the poem’s plot.
