Societies of Peace is an honors project aimed at raising awareness of the relational and cooperative modes of living within matriarchies that are being endangered by modernization. Matriarchies have an unconventional structural design that, in some ways, counters the competitive destruction of contemporary civilization and this has brought them to be acknowledged as 'societies of peace'. The project uses screen-print as a medium allowing the digitally created designs to be transferred onto canvas fabric in vivid colors. Consisting of 4 screen-printed flags collaged with screen-printed background graphics and 3 handmade digitally printed booklets, this project contributes a form of representation for matriarchies and their structure in accordance to the studies of German feminist, Heide Göttner-Abendroth. The four flags symbolically represent the four defining qualities of a matriarchy: sacred culture, gift economy, egalitarian community, and horizontal relational network. All of which contribute to their harmonious way of life. The 3 digitally printed and handmade booklets provide simple information about the 3 surviving matriarchies in Asia: the Minangkabau (Indonesia), the Mosuo (China), and the Khasi (India). Each flag's design is derived from the meaningful visual cultures of each of the 3 Asian matriarchies accompanied by uniquely created lotus symbols that represent the matriarch and their role in each defining quality.
