In today’s world, crimes are still committed against women & with an increasing number of violence against in India, public spaces are becoming less safer for women. 'Kawach' is a UI/UX design project on 'Street Harassment Against Women', which caters to the emergency needs of women citizens through mobile app giving them a safe & confident experience in public spaces. The design process involved understanding the existing system & pain points of women while commuting regularly in public spaces & then finding the gaps/opportunities within the system to work. We clustered some insights from personal interviews + field research + survey+ secondary research that helped us come up with different personas for the UX design. This further helped us understand the real scenario in depth and empathise more with our end-users. The app primarily works in two ways – firstly, you can use it when you’re not sure about the situation and just want to reach out to your emergency contacts and inform them about your location.. Secondly, you can use it when you’re in serious trouble and want the help from police authorities by raising SOS. It also comes with a finger ring that helps in quick evidence collection and send signals without the need to take out the phone manually. The app doesn’t require internet data/WiFi to work because, in most emergency situations, users will not be in a position to have internet working or switch it on or wait for a signal. Hence, Kawach is an exceedingly useful alert and response solution based on the tracking of the location and sharing the coordinates with local authorities and emergency contacts.
