Summary The Virtual is Real is a portfolio of the stories of 11 survivors or victims of various forms of online violence and abuse from around the world. Its aim is to raise awareness that gender-based violence is violence wherever it is perpetrated and its consequences are as traumatic in the real world as they are offline. As a result, we were inspired to design and program an immersive and multimedia campaign that could help elevate their horrific digital experiences into something that was as physically tangible as possible. Goals & Objectives Virtual violence and online abuse is more prevalent now than ever before. The campaign aims to contribute to making the web a safe space free of violence and discrimination. The majority of victims of digital violence are women and girls. By allowing those women to share their stories the campaign aims to destigmatize the survivors of this form of gender based violence. We wanted to ensure that the carefully composed digital experience could, at the very least, do justice to the experiences of these 11 brave survivors or tragic victims. Results & Impact The campaign has relaunched the conversation on tech facilitated violence including with major social media providers. 30k have signed a dedicated petition with Global Citizen.
