Meena is South Asia’s most popular cartoon character. She is a nine-year-old girl who braves all challenges, whether attending school or combating child discrimination. The Meena character has become incredibly well-known as she addresses the important concerns impacting kids. The stories feature Meena, her brother Raju, her pet parrot Mithu, and other members of her family and neighborhood.

But digital technology and connectivity are fundamentally changing children's lives. They don't have time to watch Meena cartoons these days. They are too preoccupied with their academics to watch TV or play outside.
 
Connecting with children digitally is one of UNICEF's main priorities in the digital age.

Given this, UNICEF wanted to partner with organizations like Riseup Labs, which works with children and young people to empower them to create child-friendly apps and web content with innovative solutions to social issues and challenges.

When the first game of this project, Meena Game, was released on 10th December 2016, many gamers were excited to play this game. They started missing their Meena cartoon memories from their youth. More than 5 million people have downloaded the Meena Game from the Google Play Store and the iOS App Store in six years since its release.

Gamers were thrilled when UNICEF brought Meena Game 2 to the world on 17th December 2018. Riseup Labs built the game entirely in a 3D video game this time. The game industry and the media responded more to it. Meena Game 2 received the “Teacher Approved Badge” from Google as the first game in Bangladesh. Parents felt more confident allowing their kids to play these games.
