Is mezcal extracted from cacti that contain mescaline? If so, does that make it a psychedelic substance? Why is it almost only produced in Oaxaca? And where does the smoky flavour come from? Also - what’s with the worm at the bottom of the bottle!?
I set out to investigate all these questions in this short piece.
Concept
Derived from the pondering that initiated this story, the conceptual DNA is built around the notion of a crawling, waving worm. Peppering in psychedelic colors, smoke, and hints to Mexican death rituals. And animated to Mexican music that could make your body move in waveforms, too.
Graphic design
With the title frame "Mezcal Margarita" I wanted to allude to the label of an imagined bottle of Mezcal with a worm wrapped around the type. The typeface that encapsulated that special feeling I wanted to capture is the brand new, extremely versatile, variable typeface Bufala.
Creative tech approach
Creatively, the driving force has been visual/technical explorations that could lead to places I hadn’t been before. Jumping between different software to find the best solutions.
