Carlos J. Roldan: Be Curious, Ask Questions, Listen
Indigo Award Design

“Creativity comes into play when defining limitations, when you make the most of minimal resources”

Carlos J. Roldan is a multiple-Indigo Design winner, graphic designer, and unofficial graphic psychologist with Noblanco, and he has always wanted to be a designer. “At first, I didn’t even know what it was called,” Roldan says. “I was passionate about all things visual: drawing, popular culture, and everything I saw on television.” Roldan comes from Medellín, Colombia, a city renowned for its amazing street art, vibrant colors, lush vegetation, and incredible mountainous scenery. “I am particularly drawn to how lively and contrasting tropical hues can be,” he says. “I always try to combine them with more neutral colors.”

For Roldan, it’s imperative that designers understand that they’re fundamentally providing a service. “Much of a project’s success depends on how we treat people and how we handle frustration,” he says. “Working for others largely comes down to these two things.” He also believes that one of the keys to success for novice designers lies in the ability to ask questions and stay curious. “Listen not only to what is said but also to what is left unsaid,” Roldan says. “Try to be skeptical by going to the original sources of information. Train your ears first and your eyes second.”

Roldan practices this advice in real life by establishing trust and rapport with his clients early on. “I maintain constant communication with my clients throughout the project, keeping them updated on its progress,” he says. “I never promise what I can’t deliver, and I’m very careful with deadlines, ensuring not to deliver late unless the client is notified in advance.” This adherence to transparency, reliability, and solid work is central to Roldan’s success.

He approaches design from a problem-solving stance, identifying what needs to happen and seeing clearly how his design provides the solution. “I believe that a problem is resolved when the objective is well-defined,” Roldan says. “Once I have a clear grasp of it, I can establish possible solutions and translate the best one into a formal proposal.”

Roldan leads with strategy, allowing it to determine the best potential paths to solve the concern. “Creativity comes into play when defining limitations, when you make the most of minimal resources,” he says. “This approach is valuable to me because it reflects a responsible attitude, using less to achieve the greatest possible impact.”

Indigo Design Award has honored Roldan’s approach, strategy, and vision several times, which he credits as encouraging him to do things better. “I believe that a competition like the Indigo Design Award prompts companies to question which of their projects are truly worth submitting for peer evaluation,” Roldan says. “It drives them to elevate their work.” He’s also cited his Indigo wins on his CV, professional branding, and pitches.

Roldan plans to continue his professional growth by staying curious, lifelong learning, and applying new methodologies, tools, or theories to his design approach. “In short, it’s about testing and experimenting to achieve different, yet consistent results,” he says. Personally, he plans to draw inspiration from the arts, film, and painting and enjoy good conversations with interesting company.
