Joey Hou: Always Question Yourself
Indigo Award Design

“Design is not just about aesthetics or deliverables; it’s a way of thinking and solving problems”

Joey Hou’s personal philosophy is to always question herself and keep thinking. “I believe the only truths we can fully trust are the ones we recognize within ourselves,” she says. “For me, reflection isn’t about doubt, but about staying awake and honest with my work, others, and myself.”

Hou embraces several artistic disciplines, calling herself a designer, writer, musician-in-progress, and story architect. Her advice for aspiring designers is straightforward and dovetails with her personal philosophy. “Be yourself,” Hou says. “In design, it’s easy to get lost trying to follow trends or fit into what you think others expect. The most powerful work comes from embracing your perspective, story, and the way you see the world. Techniques and tools can always be learned, but what makes you stand out is your voice.”

She grew up in Shanxi, China. “It’s not a very big or well-known province,” Hou says. “Growing up there, I often felt a quiet distance from the world’s spotlight. That environment gave me two things: a deep longing for freedom and an appreciation of the vastness of landscapes. Those wide rivers and mountains felt larger than life. Living there made me more ambitious and planted a desire not just to see the world, but to shape it and make changes that reached beyond my hometown.”

Hou discovered her love of design after she finished her undergraduate degree in business, and in doing so, a whole new world of possibilities opened up. “I’ve always been curious about design,” she says. “Even as a kid I loved playing with Photoshop, and in school I enjoyed making presentations and experimenting with motion transitions. After graduation, I studied design in a training program and later applied to the graphic design MFA program at ArtCenter College of Design. The journey from self-interest to structured learning and then to graduate studies really shaped the way I approach design today.”

She sees her design approach as slightly unconventional. “Most people start with visual form, but because I came from a non-design background, I tend to start from concept,” Hou says. “For me, design begins with defining the problem, understanding the context, and asking what idea or principle should guide the work. From there, I focus on logic and structure, mapping out the system, researching across disciplines, and identifying key leverage points.” Only after she has the foundational structure in place will Hou begin to prototype. “Design is not just about aesthetics or deliverables; it’s a way of thinking and solving problems,” she says. “What matters most is whether the work captures that spirit: questioning, structuring, and creating solutions that are meaningful beyond form.”

Hou’s gold and silver Indigo Design winning work was inspired by a very personal moment. “I had a debate with my ex about feminism,” she says. “He couldn’t really feel it, but I could sense how unfriendly and biased certain gaming environments were towards women. That experience made me wonder, could graphic design be used as a tool to fundamentally address and even dissolve those kinds of linguistic biases? That question became the seed for the project.”

Being recognized by Indigo Design felt like a mixture of joy and recognition for Hou. “What made me especially happy was that the work wasn’t only acknowledged for its design quality but also for the social change it tried to speak to. The recognition gave me a sense of encouragement to keep pushing in that direction.”
