"Ugly Duckling" is a final year project by Teng Por Xuen, showcased at the Hipxy Exhibition in December 2023. Teng curated this magazine by collecting articles from the internet, collaborating with designers and models for interviews and photoshoots, and capturing photographs from various locations nationwide. Drawing inspiration from the fable of the Ugly Duckling, where the protagonist experiences loneliness and rejection due to its perceived ugliness by other farm animals, this magazine addresses similar issues of marginalization. It focuses on the voices of individuals who have been historically overlooked based on gender, sexual orientation, body type, and unconventional ideas, despite their attempts to be heard. "Ugly Duckling" is pioneering in Malaysia as the first magazine to explore experimental content, gender-neutral topics, and diverse philosophies.
