As an indigenous Māori-owned studio, the rising of the Matariki star cluster marks the start of our year and is a chance for us to remember and celebrate. 

So, to help celebrate and welcome in the first official Matariki national holiday, we designed a set of posters incorporating key words and phrases in Māori, relating to each of the nine stars within the Matariki cluster. Each one features the name centred, with words around it relating to indigenous concepts they represent.

The words are stretched to create each star form. We used a font that was bold, legible at distance, and held up well to distortion. On backgrounds we expanded on the idea of distorting and stretching and created a segmented gradient in a color palette drawing from the early morning sky.

We utilized the large street-facing window in our studio, with the poster installation arranged in the Matariki cluster formation throughout the Matariki period, as well as gifted limited edition art prints to clients
