Throughout World War Two, against seemingly impossible odds and in total secrecy, the Codebreakers at Bletchley Park systematically broke Germany’s communications cipher systems and developed the world’s first computer to provide the Allies with vital intelligence. Most historians agree that Bletchley Park shortened the war significantly, saving countless lives and changing the shape of the world that emerged from it. From 1939 to 1946, Bletchley Park was home to the Government Code & Cypher School which was renamed Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) in 1946. GCHQ continues to play a vital role in national and international intelligence and security to this day. 

Today, Bletchley Park is an internationally renowned heritage attraction, visited by people from around the world, which acknowledges the successes from the War and the people responsible for them. By presenting and explaining these achievements, in the very place where they occurred, Bletchley Park brings together the dramatic history of the 20th century with the challenges we face in the 21st in our rapidly changing and technologically complex society.

‘The Intelligence Factory’ is located in ‘Block A’, a newly restored wartime building at the heart of this historic Second World War codebreaking site that originally housed the Naval Section. As the authentic setting for The Intelligence Factory exhibition, visitors can explore history in the place where it happened. The exhibition development was part of a wider capital programme to restore and return two wartime Blocks and a further building to public use.

Block A is a Grade 2 listed building. It was restored as far as is possible to its wartime appearance and layout, removing all post-war partitions, suspended ceilings and fittings. Remaining historic building fabric was preserved and restored as much as possible, while enabling access for visitors, and the space was decorated to replicate its wartime finish. New house lighting, following the wartime design and layout, was installed, along with electrical and data points. The rooms make up two ‘spurs’ which branch off from a central spine-like corridor containing the exhibition Introduction and Conclusion spaces.
